20 Years of Creativity, Community & Growth

Twenty years ago, our Virginia marketing agency started with a simple idea: creative work could do more than look good. It could actually solve real problems for brands, businesses and nonprofits.

What began as a small, artist-driven vision has grown into a full-service agency serving clients right here in Harrisonburg, VA, throughout the Shenandoah Valley and across the country.

But while the tools, platforms and strategies may have evolved, our purpose hasn’t budged. We have always been about helping businesses move forward in meaningful ways, and that work continues today. This anniversary isn’t only a testament to longevity, it’s about our dedication to creating solutions, supporting our clients and figuring out what works.

born from ingenuity & grit

Our founder and owner, Vada Kelley, didn’t have a traditional agency in mind when she started two decades ago. She built the company on the belief that marketing should solve business problems, not just promote products.

Vada, Founder and CEO of Estland, gives creative direction to Mary, Estland's Client Success director.

That mindset didn’t just shape the company; it became the foundation Estland is still built on today. As a young female business owner, earning a seat at the table wasn’t automatic. It was something she had to prove, again and again.

You work harder, you learn everything there is to learn, you become an expert in your field — and eventually, you earn the respect of everyone in the room.”

not just marketing: True Partnership & Purpose

Our goal has never been to act like an outside vendor. From the beginning, we have always set out to deliver great work and build real, lasting relationships.

I deeply care about our clients… I really care when they have success and when they don’t,”

Vada Kelley, Founder & CEO, Estland

That mentality carries across the agency. Team members are encouraged to think beyond their roles, contribute ideas and take ownership of their work. “It goes beyond marketing. We’re helping businesses become something sustainable in their community,” said Mary Snow, Estland’s Client Success Director.

Estland’s Chief Technology Officer, John Vaughan, echoed that sentiment, “at the end of the day, we want to be someone they feel like they can rely on—not just a vendor.” He continued, “We’re straight with our clients. If we say something will be done, we do everything we can to make sure it happens.”

We don’t try to force a one-size-fits-all approach. We do what works for the client, and we’re honest about it.”

Adapting Every Step of the Way

The marketing world today looks nothing like it did 20 years ago, and neither do we. From the rise of mobile and the expansion of social media to the shift brought on by the pandemic, the ability to pivot has been and continues to be one of our greatest strengths.

If I didn’t adapt, I would be out of business,”

Vada Kelley, Founder & CEO, Estland

That mindset continues today, especially as new technologies like AI reshape the landscape. But we were built to take change in stride and remain curious and willing to learn in the pursuit of the best solution for each client.

Giving Back Where It All Began

Our growth wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the local community, and our anniversary is an ideal chance to give back in a meaningful way.

The Define Your Moment Grant will award $50,000 in marketing services to one local small business or nonprofit, helping them take the next step forward.

“There wouldn’t be an Estland without the support and trust of local businesses,” Vada said. “This is our way of saying thank you.”

The initiative brings the past and future together by honoring the community that built us up while investing in its next chapter. The winner will be announced at our 20th Anniversary Celebration on May 27.

Looking Ahead to the Next 20 Years

The future of Estland will look different because it always has. With new technologies, new challenges and new opportunities ahead, the focus remains on staying adaptable while remaining human.

“I think we need to remember that we’re human beings,” Vada said. Even as the industry changes, that perspective will continue to guide the work.

The next chapter of our Virginia marketing agency isn’t defined yet, but it will be shaped the same way the first 20 years were: by curiosity, creativity and a commitment to doing what’s best for those who trust us most.
